The 10th Annual SRGC conference will be held on 9-10 November 2023 jointly with SkIN Canada (Skin Investigation Network of Canada).

On behalf of the Scientific Organizing Committee of the SRGC, we would like to welcome you to the 2023 Skin Research Group of Canada’s 10th Annual Scientific Meeting.

As in years past, SRGC 2023 will serve to showcase the very best in Canadian basic science, translational, and clinical research on the skin.

The SRGC meeting will hold two workshops in collaboration with SkIN Canada. The two workshops are as follows:

1. Skin Canada Training Workshop 1 – Patient Research Engagement on Thursday November 9 at 4:00 PM EST.

2. Skin Canada Training Workshop 2 – Equity, Diversity and Inclusion on Friday November 10 at 4:00 PM EST.

Team Development Awards (Deadline January 15 2024)

SkIN Canada is providing funds to catalyze new multi-center teams pursuing novel skin research. These awards are intended to support preliminary activities that are typically not fundable as stand-alone projects. The deadline for the application is Monday January 15 2024 before 11:59 PM EST.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)-Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA) Inclusive Research Excellence Prize

Aaron Drucker, along with an international team of collaborators, won two CIHR-IMHA Inclusive Research Excellence Prizes of $25,000 each for the project “Living systematic review and network meta-analysis of systemic immunomodulatory treatments for atopic dermatitis.” The project provides up-to-date data comparing the effectiveness of different systemic treatments for atopic dermatitis, helping clinicians and patients understand the relative merits of medications including biologics and JAK inhibitors. The prizes were in the categories of Team Science, highlighting the importance of the multidisciplinary team, and Open Science, for making the data publicly accessible through www.EczemaTherapies.com

SkIN Canada would like to express a call for interest for volunteer positions available in the following committees with with SkIN Canada:

News from the CSPA

  • CSPA had a very productive summer on the advocacy front. from collaborating on multiple patient input submissions with different organizations to completing a federal pre budget submission.
  • CSPA recently welcomed Maddy McCarville, Knowledge Translation Coordinator, to the team. Maddy holds a Master of Public Health focused on International Development and is an enthusiastic and talented addition to our organization.
  • CSPA would like to thank our summer students Advocacy Coordinator, Daniel Benyamin, and Fundraising Coordinator, Georgia Fay, for their phenomenal contributions! CSPA gratefully knowledges the funding provided by the Canada Summer Jobs program.
  • As a member of the Patients Redefining the Future of Health Care in Canada’s Health Data Working Group, CSPA has endorsed the Declaration of Personal Health Data Rights in Canada. The Declaration aims to build consensus among patients, caregivers, citizens, and groups representing them; create awareness of health data-related issues in Canada; spur conversations; and inform policies and decision-making.
  • Eczema and conditions like anxiety and depression often go hand in hand.  CSPA is part of an international team that executed a global survey of 6,000 patients which showed that these two mental health conditions are a main reason for the dramatic drop in quality of life that eczema patients experience. This #WorldAtopicEczemaDay, we’re shedding light on the mental health impacts of eczema and advocating for more services and support for patients and their caregivers. It’s time to improve eczema care. Learn more at www.improveeczemacare.com

Public and Patient Engagement Initiative: Compensating Patient Partners in Research

The issue of compensating patient partners is a challenging area with many factors to consider. Some of these considerations include determining different forms and levels of payment for different roles, distinguishing between compensation and the coverage of expenses, and how to navigate these important discussions and decisions within research teams.

To complement this guidance, we have summarized the various compensation policies across the SPOR SUPPORT Units in Canada and provided links to additional compensation resources to inform these important discussions and decisions within research teams.

Join the Global Dermatology Research Revolution

As an essential contributor to dermatology patient care, you are invited to lend your support to the Global Research on the Impact of Dermatological Diseases (GRIDD) Study, which is focused on the collection of data from across the globe to demonstrate the impact of dermatological conditions on patient lives.
In order to acquire this crucial impact data, GlobalSkin in collaboration with co-lead researchers Prof. Chris Bundy (Cardiff University) and Prof. Matthias Augustin (University Medical Centre Hamburg Eppendorf, Germany) developed the Patient-Reported Impact of Dermatological Diseases (PRIDD) measure. This scientifically robust tool is designed to assess the impact of conditions affecting the skin, hair, nails, and mucosa from the patient’s standpoint.
GlobalSkin seeks the participation of 10,000 dermatological patients for the GRIDD Study, which consists of completing a 10–20-minute online survey. The survey is available in 17 languages and will be open from June 5 to December 31, 2023.
To play your part, please spread the word within your network and direct adult dermatology patients to this survey link https://globalskin.org/GRIDDStudy
The importance of your role in making the GRIDD Study a success cannot be stressed enough. By leveraging your patient communities to participate in the study, you will be championing patient focused care and making a significant contribution in the advancement of enhanced treatment possibilities and health care policies. Your cooperation will also promote a holistic representation of dermatological conditions worldwide, pinpointing territories that require refined care, treatment advancements, and improved affordability of medication.
This research has received ethical approval from Cardiff University. For further information, please visit https://globalskin.org/research
